Based on Alexander Pushkin’s 1820 poem of the same name, Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila opera tells the epic fairy tale of the brave knight rescuing the prince’s daughter from the evil wizard. From a collection of 12 Vivaldi concerti grossi entitled “L’Estro armonico” (“Harmonic Inspiration”), Nos. 8 and 11 became Bach's Concerti for solo organ. Much in demand after the outstanding success of his Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra, Carl Maria von Weber wrote his bassoon concerto for Georg Friedrich Brandt of the Munich Hofkapelle. “Gabriel’s Oboe” is Ennio Morricone’s main theme for the soundtrack to the
1986 motion picture The Mission, starring Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons. One of the best known and best loved pieces of serious music ever written, the spirit of the “New World Symphony” reflects the vitality Dvorak felt in the still-young culture of America.
