Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from The Nutcracker ballet before the its December 1892 premiere, intended for concert performance, which became instantly popular. The one-act opera Cavalleria rusticana (Rustic Chivalry), based on a popular short story (and play) by Giovanni Verga, was the first prize winner of a music publisher’s contest with Mascagni taking 40 curtain calls on opening night.
